SEPTEMBER GARDENER
We lost a tree in our yard,
and now the hostas that
once thrived underneath
it look stressed. Do some
hoStaS tolerate
SUn?
Most
hostas prefer shade, but there are some that do fine
in full sun, including Invincible’, ‘Sun Power1
, ‘Sunny
Delight’, ‘Squash Casserole’, ‘Fragrant Bouquet’, and
‘Fried Bananas’. (In the South, all hostas need midday
shade.) In general, thicker-leaved hostas hold up in sun
because they retain moisture better. Yellow-leaved
kinds typically are more tolerant than those with blue
leaves. To help your hostas recover from the shock of
increased sun exposure, water them regularly and
mulch around plants to keep soil consistently m oist
You may find that they actually take a shine to the
sun. If they don’t, transplant them to a shadier site.
